How to choose the best domain name for your business
The first step to getting your business online is to register a website domain name. Choosing a domain name for search engines is vital when registering a good domain name.
The domain acts as a recognisable online brand (much like a company name does offline); ensures that no-one else can register that name; is the address people use to find you; and helps the search engines determine how relevant your site is to a particular keyword search.
 |
Find your best Keywords then register your domain name |
The key is to find a domain that is relatively short and easy to remember. This is not easy due to the huge demand for domains, but if you spend time on keyword research, find your best keywords and choose the right domain name, you can boost internet search results to bring you that all important targeted traffic.
Whilst a good domain name won't guarantee success, it can have a positive (or negative) impact on almost every aspect of online business. This page includes information, advice and links for how to choose the best domain name to register for your business, along with everything associated with domain name registrations, to help you get it right.

Sub Domains for Registered Clients
If you already have a domain hosted with us, then you may also purchase sub domains for use with your main domain. These could be used for different areas of your site; different products or for different marketing campaigns. There's no need to actually register these domains as they are just associated with the main domain; we just have to set up the server. An example is
http://subdomain.domain.com. There is a small yearly charge for this service.

Domain Name Extensions
There are now over 50 domain extensions from international domains such as dot.com through to specialised and country specific domains. But if you want to be found globally, it is wiser to purchase a name with a dot.com as a first priority, as most internet users expect domains to end with this extension.
Once you have secured a 'top level domain' you can register all available variations such as dot.net, dotco.uk., dot.org and so on. This strategy will reduce the chances of your competitors registering your name with different extensions and hijacking your customers.

Choosing a Domain Name for Search Engines
A keyword rich domain name is critical for online success, so find the most popular keywords your target audience will search for and craft those words into a domain name.
If you are acquiring a name that has the potential to cause confusion, it is generally recommended that you obtain the most logical variations. This often includes non-hyphenated and hyphenated versions, along with words that are phonetically similar and common misspellings.

Determine the Best Keywords for your Domain Name
There are a variety of tools you can use to determine which keywords rate the most popular for your target market. Here are just a few:
 |
Google Suggest Google's free keyword suggestion tool allows you to see actual search terms people type in and as you type, you will see the variations of the search term appearing in a drop down menu with the number of times the term has been used. From the menu, you can link direct from your chosen phrase to the google listings pages. |
 |
Overture Keyword Tool This free keyword suggestion tool allows you to see actual search terms people type in and will suggest related terms, including misspellings. So however good your keywords are, if no-one is using them to find what they want, your domain or website will not be found. |
 |
Wordtracker Wordtracker provides keyword results from search engines along with related keywords and thesaurus links. You can select specific search engines to find a value and rank for your best keywords or phrases, the number of competing websites, and the bids being paid for clicks.
A free trial (limited results) will show you how you can get insight into what your potential customers are searching for, and you can purchase just one day's full use of the system - well worth every penny, and not expensive. |
Tip
Once you have found your best related keywords, combine them to create 4 or 5 domain names to describe your product or service exactly.

Domain Names and Directory Listings
The name of your business dictates how and where you get listed in a directory category. Directories such as Yahoo and Dmoz list names by category, and in symbol, numerical then alphabetical order. So *1a would list before 1a which would list before 'a' - and so on - just like a standard telephone directory.

Google and your Domain Name
Having your main keywords in your domain name may help you with higher search results, but only if your content is relevant and meets search engines' criteria. Google, for instance, places more emphasis on your page title and page content than on your domain name. Try this yourself - go to Google and type in a search term relevant to your business, and see how many domains include the search term. Notice the domain names - the top ten may have some relevance to the search term, but this rarely occurs.

Domain Name Renewals and Transfers
You will generally receive a warning that your domain name is due to expire, around 30 days before the due date. So if you want to keep a domain, be sure to remember to renew. If you don't renew, your Registrar will put the domain 'on hold' for a further period and after that, it will be available as an 'expired' domain for anyone to purchase.
