Convert to Flash

Think about your target audience. If the primary purpose of the website is to offer artistic or visual effects to the visitors, perhaps a Design/Arts company, or music website (with visitors coming to the web site on some reference other than search engines) then Flash is recommended.

For other categories of business, consider the following points:-

  Intrusive

Some of your audience may find Flash (or other multimedia presentations) intrusive if it automatically loads, so give them a choice to take action or not.

Flash can be used to create entire "Flash sites" or to add interactive elements to standard HTML sites. Some Flash-only sites are accompanied by non-Flash sites in an effort to cater to a wider audience.

  Modem Speeds

Provide several formats and speed options for visitors to choose from, to match their internet connections and computer capabilities. Less than 30% of people accessing the internet have high speed connections, and the rest are still on slow, dial-up connections.

  Operating Systems

A recent survey showed that 50% of web surfers use Windows 98 or older operating systems, most of which don't support video display well. Convert both video and audio to Flash format and keep the clips short, to ensure they can be viewed or heard on older systems.

Don't use Flash for items that you want the search engines to index. At present, automated search engines (spiders) can't read Flash format, so if you want your website to be search engine and directory friendly, and your audience to find your website, create a non-Flash alternative .

Make sure that the search engines can see plenty of non-Flash, fully optimised content (including the index page). If your site opens with a great Flash introduction but nothing else on the page, the search engines will ignore it altogether, and directory editors will probably leave before the animation is finished.
